SC Johnson on Federal Ingredient Transparency
As an industry-leading manufacturer of household consumer brands and a long-time leader in ingredient disclosure, SC Johnson supports federal legislation on ingredient transparency. We believe in having a clear federal standard that prevents a patchwork of potentially differing state requirements that would pose a significant compliance challenge for a 50-state marketer like SC Johnson.
SC Johnson launched our ingredient transparency program in 2009 to give consumers as much information as possible about the products they buy. In 2015, we were first in the industry to disclose product-specific fragrance ingredients. We have also led the way in advocating for product transparency at the federal and state levels, including strong support for strengthening the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act and advocating for California’s Cleaning Product Right to Know Act (Senate Bill 258). That bipartisan bill, which was signed into law in 2017, had support of both industry and environmental NGOs and made California the first state in the nation to require ingredient disclosure on product labels and online for cleaning products.
We continue to encourage bipartisan conversation on ingredient transparency at the federal level, and we know the legislation will take many forms as the debate moves forward. We look forward to working with industry, the NGO community, and Congress to ensure any final federal legislation preserves the California Cleaning Product Right to Know Act and accomplishes our goal of a federal ingredient communication standard that empowers consumers with consistent information on the ingredients in the products they buy.
